桌上展览 | 黄汉明《艺术必须美》与酷儿亚文化

《艺术必须美》,黄汉明，2011，演讲记录，9’26”
1975年，著名行为艺术家玛丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇为现场的三百多名观众表演了作品《艺术必须美，艺术家必须美》。期间，她双手各执一把梳子，不停地、用力地梳头、拉扯自己的头发，她还在默默地念到：“艺术必须美，艺术家必须美。”以这样一种痛苦的方式向人们质问：艺术到底是不是关于美的？
本次创邑优质入驻会员 Arthub 公映的作品就和这次行为艺术作品有关。2011年，艺术家黄汉明受邀参加香港艺术博览会的一次辩论，主题是“艺术必须美”。与参与辩论的嘉宾们围绕玛丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇的行为艺术作品《艺术必须美、艺术家必须美》进行展开讨论。
视频如实地记录了艺术家黄汉明的演讲过程：在没有通知任何人的情况下，黄汉明变装为《花样年华》中的张曼玉，以一身旗袍登场，阐述了自己的观点，并在最后揭露了美的真相是什么。
和此次公映一起呈现的，还有《典藏》杂志编辑李素超所撰写的一篇文章，她从黄汉明的生活背景、文化身份的角度为我们阐述了黄汉明的创作脉络。

关于艺术家
黄汉明，生于新加坡，目前工作生活在柏林。在他的录像、摄影、装置和行为艺术作品中常涉及对电影、流行文化经典的重新解读。通过使用不同的语言、性别、种族、国籍和历史背景等因素扮演不同的角色。
通过进行不完美的转译及重新定义，艺术家旨在揭示存在于个人与社会“正统性”和“原创性”中的割裂和延迟。呈现出身份是如何在社会中构建、繁殖及循环的。
为配合此次桌上展览展出的艺术家黄汉明，我们找到了2014年6月号的《艺术界》杂志，不但大篇幅报道了黄汉明，更是从多个角度介绍了酷儿亚文化及其与当代艺术的关系。

Screening: Art Must Be Beautiful

Art Must be Beautiful, Ming Wong, 2011, video documentation, 9’26”
In 1975, artist Marina Abramovic performed Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful in front of more than 300 people. In that performance, she uses two brushes to brush and stretch her hair constantly and powerfully. She kept on repeating "art msut be beatitul, artist must be beautiful." By using this painful and extreme way of performing, she was questioning everyone a quesion: Does art must be beautiful?
The current screening of Ming Wong is related to this performance in 1975. Ming Wong was invited to a debate organised by Intelligence Squared, to debate if “Art Must Be Beautiful” at the Hong Kong Art Fair. The debate motion itself is derived from one of Marina Abramovic’s key works Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful (1975), which challenges the notion of beauty, the limits of the body and the possibilities of the mind.
Without informing anybody beforehand, Ming turned up at the debate as the character played by Maggie Cheung in Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love – a beautiful art object and a sex symbol of Hong Kong – and proceeded to deconstruct his alter ego…
Arthub also invited Suchao Li, editor from Artco China Journal to write an essay about Ming Wong's performance. She analysed Ming Wong's cultural background and identity, then presented a clear thread of Ming's art creation.
About Artist
Ming Wong re-interprets iconic moments from world cinema and popular culture in his videos, photographs, installations and performances, often portraying multiple key characters irrespective of language, gender, ethnicity, nationality or historical period.
Through imperfect translations and re-enactments, the artist uncovers the gaps and slippages that haunt the notions of “authenticity” and “originality” in self and society, and reveals how one´s identity is constructed, reproduced and circulated.
